QUARTERFINAL RECAP: NO. 1 WARROAD VS. HUTCHINSON

Warroad, the top overall seed in the Class A state playoffs took care of business of Wednesday night by defeating No. 8 seeded Hutchinson by a final score of 9-3. Warroad’s top player, Grant Slukynsky, came out swinging and recorded a hattrick within the first seven minutes of the first period.

Warroad’s offensive was flowing all around through the first period and they were able to score three more goals to give themselves a 6-1 lead going into the second period. Blake Norris and Jayson Shaugabay scored the final three goals of the period while Nik John was able to find the back of the net for Hutchinson.

The game slowed down during the second period but Warroad’s Anthony Foster was still able to help extend his team’s lead by netting a goal off of an assist from Slukynsky. Warroad went on to score two more goals in the third period but also allowed Hutchinson’s Brady Knorr to put two in the net as well.

Warroad accumulated 34 shots on goal while Hutchinson posted 20 overall. Following this victory Warroad has now advanced to the semifinals where they will play against either No. 4 seeded Mahtomedi or No. 5 seeded Delano on Friday afternoon. The game is set to be played at 1 p.m. at the XCEL Energy Center.
